Energetic protection practices are amongst the first rituals I encourage my clients to explore. I say rituals because when you find ways to make these practices your own they truly do begin to feel ritualistic.
But here’s the thing – these practices are simple to do but also simple NOT to do. When I first started to explore & connect more with the energetic & spiritual worlds – energetic protection seemed so overly simplified that I didn’t believe it was necessary. It wasn’t until my first run in with the ascension flu that I realized I was wrong and that protecting my energy was not only a choice and but a necessity.
I don’t expect you to read that sentence and think ‘yup you’re right – I should totally be protecting my energy’ — this is a choice you have to make for yourself. So let’s dive into the who, what, why, when, and where of energy protection.
To learn how to protect your energy – you’ll want to stay tuned for the next blog post.
The simple answer is everyone. Everyone can benefit from protecting their energy. I’ll explain more in just a minute but at minimum – anyone that engages with energy work should be protecting their own energy. If you see a Reiki Practitioner, a Breathwork Practitioner, an Acupuncture Practitioner, a Somatic Coach — you are likely energetically open and therefore more energetically susceptible to taking on energy that is not yours.
Energy protection is an intention setting practice. It involves setting a clear intention, a visualization exercise, and calling on spiritual support.
Once you start to open yourself up to the energetic world, you’ll learn that being ‘open’ means open to all types of energy. Protecting your energy allows you to have full autonomy to decide what you’re willing to engage with.
When you’re first learning to work with your energy I recommend protecting your energy each morning to start your day and each night before bed. As the practice becomes more habitual, you may find you prefer to protect your energy in specific situations like before attending a concert, before entering a busy store, etc. over protecting it for the full day.
You should protect your energy in crowded spaces. A crowded space is anywhere you might come in contact with multiple peoples energies in a short period of time. This could be a family get together, a store, a concert venue, a theme park. But you should also consider protecting your energy before engaging with social media, jumping on a community call or online meeting, etc.
There are for sure coaches, healers, practitioners out there that will 100% disagree with the importance of protecting your energy. I’ve listened to countless podcast episodes and read plenty of blogs that preach about energy protection being a waste of time. They often argue that if you are operating in alignment with your souls purpose you’ll never need to protect your energy because you’ll only attract aligned energies. That school of thought just isn’t resonate with me.
Let me explain – aligning with your soul’s purpose is a life long journey. This isn’t something you magically discover and the work stops. Your journey will ebb and flow. There will be times when life comes at us fast – and when it does we often [unintentionally] lower our guard. We drop our spiritual practices and get lost in the scroll. We default into old thought patterns.
When that happens we aren’t living in total alignment. It’s part of being human. I, personally, would rather have a solid habitual practice that may not be needed over potentially allowing my energy field to be shared and drained accidentally.
I mentioned this briefly at the top of the article but I had an experience a couple summers ago that really solidified the importance of energy protection for me. I was newer to working with my energy and went on the first big vacation I had taken in months – a week long vacation to a theme park with my full extended family. I’m talking shared hotel rooms and shoulder to shoulder packed summer crowds day in and day out for 7 days.
I knew I should be protecting my energy but honestly got caught up in the exhaustion of it all. I would tell myself “eh it’s fine if I skip it this morning.”
When we returned from the trip I woke up the very next morning sick. I assumed I had caught something on the plane. I went to the doctor – was tested for literally everything and it all came back negative but I wasn’t getting better. I had symptoms that persisted for over 3 weeks. About 2 weeks in I received a message from someone asking if I was familiar with the ascension flu. I wasn’t.
What I took away from this conversation is we have to care for our energy bodies the same way we have to care for our physical bodies. And when we don’t – sometimes our energy bodies get overwhelmed. And while I’m for sure over simplifying this I think you’ll get the point – while we wait for our energy body and our physical body to come back into balance we can actually experience the feeling of being physically sick. That trip had pulled me so far out of balance my physical body needed weeks to recover and to finally find that harmonious point between the energetic and physical again.
Since that experience, I’ve started habit stacking my energetic protection practices with my morning and nighttime routines and I (knock on wood) haven’t been sick since. All that to say, energy protection is something I encourage everyone to learn. It really takes less than 30 seconds and can make a world of difference.
